What Really is a Walk Behind Tractor?

The number one question we get is; what is a walk behind tractor? A walk behind tractor, also know as a single axle tractor or 2 wheel tractor, is a compact but heavy duty walk behind version of a common 4 wheel tractor. Although smaller in size, the walk behind tractors share many of the same features as a full size tractor. Automotive grade clutch, all gear/shaft drive transmission (NO BELTS), heavy duty PTO (Power Take Off) output, aggressive tractor style tires, etc.. One very cool feature of the walk behind tractor is that the handle bars are reversible. What this means is that it will allow for a front mounted PTO implement and a rear mounted PTO implement with a pull of a lever. This allows for a much more versatile machine that will operate double the implements! One of the biggest misconceptions we see and hear is, "it's just a rototiller". For the uneducated, taking a glance at a walk behind tractor that has a tiller implement fixed to it does look similar to one of the other purpose built rototillers. The Grillo Agrigarden Machines are far from that! We want to educate people on the true purpose and function of these truly amazing machines. With some dedication and persistence from the Harbor Equipment Company, we feel the Walk Behind Tractors will become more and more popular in the US for their compact size and versatility! Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions!

 Where BCS Started

In 1942, Engineer Luigi Castoldi developed a self-propelled sickle bar mower that helped revolutionize agriculture by increasing productivity and dramatically reducing the physical effort needed to harvest hay and other forage crops.

Today, Engineer Castoldi’s company, BCS S.p.A, continues to fulfill its mission to increase its customers’ productivity while reducing physical effort. Easy-to-use, versatile two-wheeled tractors have been developed to perform a wide range of tasks, ranging from all types of mowing — to seedbed preparation — to snow removal.

With more than two million customers in 80+ countries, BCS is the largest manufacturer of two-wheeled tractors and attachments in Europe. The factory, near Milan, Italy, continues to expand to meet the growing demand for these all-gear-driven, multi-purpose tractors that are built to provide customers decades of reliable service.

BCS America History

BCS products came to America in the early 1970’s at a time when Americans were re-discovering the joys of vegetable gardening and pursuing self-sufficiency. The tractor with tiller attachment was an instant success because of its superiority to the rear-tine tillers produced by US manufacturers of homeowner-quality lawn and garden equipment.

In addition to gardening, rural property owners soon found that the front-mount cutter bar attachment was ideal for mowing pond banks, under fences, around semi-dwarf fruit trees, etc. Commercial farmers, nurseries, public and private institutions then began using BCS tractors and attachments for all those applications for which four-wheel tractors are poorly suited – mowing steep roadside banks, sweeping snow from pedestrian walkways, intensive cultivation and so on.

Almost forty years later, there are now many tens of thousands of BCS owners in the US and Canada. Supporting them are 700+ servicing dealers, four regional distributors, and a national headquarters (in Portland, Oregon).

 Where Grillo Started

Grillo S.p.A. was founded in 1953 under the name of "OFFICINE PINZA". Its founder, the twenty-year-old Benito Pinza invented the first Grillo walking tractor thanks to an innovative project. The company was therefore named GRILLO in 1957, marking a milestone in the history of agricultural mechanization.

Grillo S.p.A. has been designing and producing professional machines for both agriculture and green maintenance for over 60 years, its products being suitable not also for professional but also for domestic use.

Grillo S.p.A. employs the ultimate high-technology tools to produce its machines (e.g. laser-cut, robotics, semi automatic assembly chain) and has four production plants located in the area of Cesena (Italy).

More than 20,000 machines of over 50 different models are manufactured every year and distributed in 55 countries across the five continents.
